Many scientists are feeling immense pressure to understand how they can best respond to changes in federal grantmaking, rules and policy, and also effectively contribute their skills as researchers to support sound, evidence-based public policy.

This workshop will cover how scientists can effectively participate in the public comment process, which helps shape public policy from all levels, federal to local. Professor Ryan Kelly, a professor in SMEA who is both a lawyer and a marine ecologist, will talk about (1) the mechanisms that lead to resilience in regulatory structures against major changes in administration and (2) the role of public notice and comment in administrative rule-making. Lauren Kuehne, an ecologist that works on policy-oriented conservation research, will share her experience on how public comment processes intersect with scientific careers, and strategies for writing substantive public comments.

Please don't forget to invite your friends, family and colleagues if they’re as ready as you are to stand up and fight back for the institutions of American science and health!
